Bacterial vaginosis
Black race
Cocaine or heroin use
History of abdominal surgery
History of cervical conization or a loop electrosurgical excision procedure of the cervical transformation zones
History of preterm delivery
Infections of the urinary and genital tracts
Intrauterine infection
Low prepregnancy body mass index (less than or equal to 19.8 kg per m2)
Medical disorders such as thyroid disease, diabetes mellitus, or hypertension
Mother's work is physically strenuous
Multiple gestation pregnancy
Periodontal disease
Polyhydramnios or oligohydramnios
Sexually transmitted infections (i.e., chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis)
Short pregnancy interval (less than 18 months between pregnancies)
Shortened cervix (less than 25 mm before 28 weeks gestation)
Tobacco use
Uterine anomalies
Vaginal bleeding caused by placental abruption or placenta previa
