Assessment: Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome Patient encouraged not to overuse jaw, by not chewing gum, ice, apples, beef, and other hard foods. Advise following mechanically soft diet. Patient discouraged from clenching jaw or grinding teeth, and recommend referral to dental for a plastic mouthpiece or bite block if symptoms do not improve. Apply a heating pad set at low for 20 minutes, 4 to 8 times a day. Put a cloth-covered ice pack on your jaw for 20 minutes 4 to 8 times a day. NSAID use for the next two weeks. If symptoms worsen or do not resolve recommend steroid shot for Botox injections. May then also try Nortriptyline or Flexeril at hs to reduce bruxism.
